Over the last few nights, we saw temperatures drop to -4 in Wolverhampton, making it the coldest night of winter so far. With more snow and ice forecast, it’s worth making sure that your heating system is in good working order. Therefore preventing a boiler breakdown.

How to keep your boiler working efficiently – Our top tips
  • Boiler pressure – It’s worth checking the pressure of your boiler, if it drops below 1 you may find that your radiators may only be lukewarm, therefore not maximising their full potential. To check this, simply locate the metre on the front of your boiler and make sure it is set between 1 – 1.5 bar. Check your boiler manual on how to increase the pressure if needed.
  • Radiators – Over time air can become trapped inside the radiator, which stops the radiator from warming up correctly, therefore you will have a loss of heat in that room. To check if you have this problem, simply feel the radiator when on for any cold spots, if there is bleed the radiator and this should correct the problem.
  • Pipes – If you have a utility room with a radiator with pipes exposed, they may be at risk of freezing when the temparture drops. To avoid this, simply insualte the pipes with pipe lagging. They are very easy to buy and easy to install, simply slip them on and they will work a treat!
  • Smart Device – There are many smart home devices out there at the moment. The idea is that by using one of these, you are able to control your heating when you are out and about. Therefore it makes your home more efficient, as your heating isn’t used whilst you are out.
